Armed America
Posted on 20. Feb, 2009 in Bizarre and Odd, Featured
Kyle Cassidy traveled 15,000 miles over two years photographing Americans in their homes and asking one question: “Why do you own a gun?” A good question, particularly since most of these guns are not easily reconcilable with the notion of self-defense and their true place should be somewhere in the Armed Forces. All the photo were later compiled in the book with its German edition being published this year. The pics below are taken from the latter. As said by Alan Cooperman from The Washington Post: “Each picture in Armed America could be a pro-gun advertisement - or an anti-gun poster. That’s what makes the book so riveting.”

Guns are used in recreation, sport, yes war but gun rights were given to us by the founding fathers to protect ourself in the event our government became to oppressive, and before you say we can vote, express our disdain for how the government instead of using guns to get things done. Well sometimes we just need a big stick handy when those things dont work anymore and our necks are being held to the ground by the foot of tryany

Everyone pussy-footed European and Communist/Socialist from the backwater countries with more CCTV and less rights than a freakin’ gulag is going to be screaming their bloody liberal heads off declaring: ‘oh my GOD! Americans are just crazy with all these guns! Why would you EVER need guns?’ All I have to say is this: ‘If you act like sheep in front of your government, dont be surprised when they lead you to slaughter.’

wow, what a collection of fat loser dudes. i wonder if there’s a connection between their inability to score good-looking girls (or any girls it seems in most of these examples) and their need to have something powerful in their lives…
does anyone feel happy knowing THESE dudes are armed?

Where do you think your rights, freedoms & even your standard of living as non-serfs came from?
Men & women braver & more realistic than people today stood up and took them by force from the kings, bankers and other tyrants who would make slaves of us all.
I just can’t understand how many ‘adults’ are willing to pawn everything their ancestors earned though blood, sweat & tears for dirty scraps of paper & empty promises.

At least half of these people look like someone who really shouldn’t own a gun, or indeed anything sharp.
Strange that the countries with the most murders, manslaughter and violent crime all allow the ownership of guns, isn’t it?

this is somewhat correct, but america is certainly more backwater than many european countries and we have just as many rights being taken away on a daily basis.

actually, if you own guns for protection, that is the wrong stance. if you own a gun, you are more likely to be killed accidentally and not much less likely to be killed by an intruder. the point of gun ownership is defense against corrupt governments, although revolutions are even more difficult to stage today, especially as people in america who own guns are the first to defend the government actions that take away many of their rights as long as their right own guns is not infringed.

although blunt, this is correct. corporate interests dictate much of the US and other governments today. the only reasonable way to overturn this appears to be violence. the only ones who would actually resort to violence however would only see a revolution attempt as crass and rather agree with our current government policies.

correlation does not equate to causation, even if apparent. this has been well studied and the ownership of guns really has little to do with the reasons for violence.

The US founding fathers gave us gun rights so we could have an army, because the country could not afford an army back then. Not so we could “overthrow” the government, in case it became “corrupt”. Now guns are unnecessary and dangerous. Civil societies have all but outlawed them, and they have much lower murder and suicide rates. Guns should be illegal. They are fun toys, ha ha, until someone gets shot. Drunks, kids, accidents… I’d love to follow the families in those pictures and see which one has the first shooting. Sad.

If they didn’t have the guns, no one would get shot. Instead there are more guns than people. Outlaw them. Period. Watch the murder rate drop.

if guns were outlawed, there would just be more deaths by stabbing… like in the UK.

omg, the bible does say thou shall not kill but it jesus also said you could sell your belongings for a sword (nowadays, that’s an AR-15).
To those who say THESE guys shouldn’t own guns, you are judging based on what you see, not what you know about THESE people.
It was the weapon that got us this Country. If you think without guns there would be no crime, your mistaken. It is the gun that lays down the law. If everyone could CARRY a gun everyone would be more respectful.
These guys will not give up when pushed to the pit, you shouldn’t either.
Get a gun.

Isn’t the idea that with assualt rifles individuals could protect themselves and their families against the armed forces?

There may be more stabbings in the UK than in the US, but the murder rate is still much higher in the US than any other Western nation. We have nearly 6 murders per 100K and the UK is just 2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_homicide_rate
The closest Western nation is Spain, at a little over 3/100K.
If everyone in the US had a gun, there would be a lot more shootings, especially drunken ones. Can you image - every bar fight would turn into a shooting!?!

Hahaha…everyone is so busy yelling at each other and reinforcing their own stereotypes, that no one actually bothered to read the text:
“All the photo were later compiled in the book with its German edition being published this year. The pics below are taken from the latter.”
The “latter” would mean the German version. These are German gun owners, not American!
I’m sorry, you were saying something no@no? Hahaha

There is so much murder in the US because we keep trying to outlaw everything! giving power to criminals and turning normal people into law breakers. Is this country free or not? prohibition of anything from drugs to guns doesn’t work…. anyone hear of personal responsibility?

These people feel they need their guns because they don’t want what they did to to other races to happen to them.

I live in Australia and I don’t think many people own guns. Knives are more the weapon of choice, which is better…I guess.

For protection and recreation. Great. I feel really safe now that I’ve seen those weekend riflemen. And I guess that maximum caliber and firing automation is also very sportmanlike and necessary. Did the founding fathers guarantee the right to blow things up for fun? Protection my ass. This looks more like an attack force.

This isn’t the wild west, and we are not cowboys. There really isn’t any need for firearms. And I hardly recognize hunting as “sport”. Do you enjoy killing innocent woodland creatures, have you ever seen Bambi? But yah, if you like the sneaky-ness and the stealth, or just being in nature, try taking up photography. Nothing good has come out of letting people have guns.

My best friend just got out from the service and immediately he got his concealed and carry permit and a nice glock .357 sig. We live near atlanta and go there frequently. It is for protection and not much else, say personal comfort. I don’t own guns, but I’d rather people (white or blue collar people) have them legally so that IF IF IF shit hits the fan, we have our most trusted friends, families, and neighbors around to protect themselves and our communities. I see no problem with all these high powered weapons either. If these people want to collect these things, then cool. Everyone knows that if you go on a killing spree, you’ll wind up dead. Typically psychos have expressed violent behavior BEFORE trying to get a firearm. So I’d sane people have all the guns they want.
It’s the thieves, drug dealers, and sex offenders you must worry about. Not the rednecks or gun enthusiasts. There are plenty of illegal firearms out there and these are the guns that are typically making our murder rates higher than any other country. It’s the drug dealers, thieves, and sex offenders most of this violence. So why punish those that are RESPONSIBLE with their weapons? They are innocent. Obama can take his argument to inner city streets, where most of these shootings happen.
I won’t listen to any sort of argument telling good people they can not defend nor collect for themselves. When and IF the streets are indeed better and violent crime involving guns is still up, I will then reconsider my opinion on this matter. Until then, bad people are still running around doing bad things. Focus on that.
