Paper Sculptures

These fine paper sculptures are made by the Eckman family, Allen and Petty. For years they are working with this sort of fine art. His inexhaustible inspiration and the spring of ideas are Native American Indians. Allen has a great interest in the Native American Indian partly because his great-great grandmother was a Cherokee. “I really am interested in the Indian’s material, physical and spiritual culture and that whole period of our nation’s history I find fascinating. From the western expansion, through the Civil War and beyond is of great interest to me.” Eckman has expanded his work through all these subjects .
Patty has a great interest in wildlife, birds and flowers in particular. “Ever since I was a child I have had a great appreciation of wildlife. I can sit for hours and watch the birds come to my feeder. When I look at a flower I don’t see just color, I see form. Wonderful shapes that the color tries to overpower.” Patty also has interests in the Native American culture and since the year 2000 has been sculpting beautiful Indian woman and children. On large complicated and detailed works the couple often work together and both sign the piece when completed.

These are simply……. stunning! My only “complaint” is that there isn’t more information regarding scale, size and so on… really minor details, considering the absolutely majestic nature of these sculptures! This made my morning!

I think Gary hinted at my reaction - There are truly breathtaking. When I got to the bottom - after I took a breath - the first thing I did was to close my mouth - no
kidding, these are potent images - they have ‘great’ mediciine’ in them - from the balance between eagle and
cyote fighting for the fish th ehr compassion of the mother elk nuzzeling her fawn - just incredible. But for me, I was most taken by the hoop dance - just between the knowledge of the guy just plain knowing his stuff, and his balance, and the hoops, and the joy, and the dance, and the tradition……I’m so glad I had the chance to see them….

I’m fascinated by the historial Indian paper sculptures. My question would be how big are these and if they were available for purchase
I’d very much like to share these with family members as we are part Native Indian ourselves.

I love the Eckman paper sculptures. I have some indian blood from way back and lived in South Dakota for a time. I was the person who arranged with Peter Toth to carve the indian sculpture for Aberdeen, S. D. Centennial Celebration. As far as I know it is still there. I would very much like to know where these sculptures are located so I can see them on a future visit to South Dakota. I live in Texas now and plan a trip up that way soon. Thank yyou.
